PAX 09: Red Dead Redemption

TotallyGN was at PAX in Seattle this past weekend and came away with a lot of great information on a variety of titles. One of the biggest titles there was definitely at Rockstar’s booth with their upcoming western, Red Dead Redemption. Red Dead Redemption is the sequel to 2004′s title, Red Dead Revolver and is Rockstar’s biggest title to date. According to the Rockstar representative that I spoke with Red Dead Redemption is bigger than both Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto IV respectively. Red Dead Redemption is a completely open world where if you can see a location then you can go there and explore. If you see a mountain far off on the horizon or maybe a secluded lake you can go there to explore. There are various modes of transportation in the game from your horse to a train and a steam powered boat. Since the game world is so large you will have opportunities to warp or “fast travel” to a location if you don’t want to get there the old fashioned way.
There are three main areas in Red Dead Redemption with small towns, farms and other places within those areas. Those areas would be an area that is like Mexico, a “New Austin” area and the North (which is kind of like Colorado). Red Dead Redemption has a full twenty four hour cycle so you will also get to experience both day and night in the old west. As you are progressing through the adventure you will want to do all the exploring you can and talk to whomever you come across. During the night you will come across some people out in the wilderness where you might see a campfire going and you can go up to the people and engage them in conversation. The food chain is also in effect in this game as evidenced by vultures we saw starting to circle the sky above a bunch of people that were just killed in a shootout.
Red Dead Redemption is an open world title where you can pretty much do anything that you want. Beware though because your actions will have unforseen consequences. This title will also support Rockstar’s Social Club, however, no further details on how it will work have been released at this time. Keep your eye on TotallyGN and we will be sure to update you with more information as it is released. For now check out the trailer below as well as the new screenshots and be sure to check out Red Dead Redemption when it hits store shelves in 2010.
