THQ recently invited TotallyGN to take a look at their upcoming title, Darksiders. We were able to get decently far into the game and have come back to give our readers some of our preview impressions before the game launches on January 5th. As soon as you begin playing the game you will notice a lot of similarities to another big title in this genre, God of War. While that comparison isn’t entirely inaccurate Darksiders is definitely a much bigger and a much deeper gameplay experience. You assume the role of War, one of the four horsemen, and you have been set up. Now you have to deal with the consequences while at the same time trying to figure out what is going on. A long time ago there was a truce made between Heaven and Hell, however, events have transpired that have broken it. That is the basic premise of the story at the beginning of the game without spoiling too much.

During our time with the game we battled some “normal” enemies as well as participating in some epic battles against some bosses that would fill up a good part of the screen. The controls are pretty easy to get used to and if you have played similar titles within this genre you should be able to pick them up quickly. The environments themselves tend to be pretty big and the art style is beautiful. You will quickly notice the attention of detail and the amount of work the development team put into this title. As you progress through the game you will collect different kinds of souls. Souls work as currency in the game and will allow you to upgrade your weapon, buy entirely new weapons, learn new attacks and more whenever you come across a traveling merchant. You also have somewhat of a sidekick to help you out when needed who is voiced by Mark Hamill, which brings us to the voice acting. During the parts that we got to play I thought the voice acting was really well done and the development team certainly nailed the feeling that they were aiming for. You definitely get a sense of the impending doom that is surrounding the main character as well as the world itself.

Another thing that you will notice is that, unlike some other titles in the genre, this game isn’t as linear. In the beginning it is fairly linear, however, you will get to a point where the game opens up a bit and you can choose in what order you want to tackle an objective. For comic book fans Joe Mad is the guy behind the art style for this game which is one of the reasons why it works it so well. Take a look at the videos to see what I am talking about in that regard. As you progress through the title War will eventually be reunited with Ruin, his horse. For anyone who attended the Penny Arcade expo a few months ago, they saw Ruin set up in one of THQ’s booths and Major Nelson even did an Inside XBox about it. Utilizing Ruin will open up new gameplay aspects to you such as being able trample enemies and helping to cross dangerous areas among other things. Be sure to check back in the coming weeks and check out our Darksiders review as the release date gets closer.
