Nintendo Dominates The Holidays And 2009

The results are in and Nintendo, once again, dominated the holiday season.  According to the December 2009 NPD figures Nintendo sold approximately 3.8 million Wii consoles and 3.3  million DS systems.  This marks a  new all time single month U.S. sales record at for both the Wii and the DS. 

“Wii, Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi combined to sell more than 7 million units in the month of December alone,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.  “Clearly there is overwhelming consumer demand for fun games, motion controls and value.  This remarkable hardware sales surge presents a tremendous software opportunity for Nintendo and its third-party partners as we head ino 2010.”

Games on Nintendo’s platforms also dominated with Nintendo titles taking six of the top ten slots in software sales.  These include New Super Mario Bros Wii at number one with more than 2.8 million sold, Wii Sports Resort at number two with more than 1.7  million sold, Wii Fit Plus with the Wii Balance Board accessory at number three with more than 1.7 million sold, Wii Play at number six with more than one million sold, Mario Kart Wii at number seven with more than 936,000 sold and, finally, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for the DS at number ten with more than 656,000 sold.

For all of 2009, Nintendo finished with seven of the top ten best selling games of the year.  These include New Super Mario Bros Wii at  number two with more than 4.2 million sold, Wii Sports Resort at number three with more than 4.2 million sold, Wii Fit at number four with more than 3.5 million sold, Mario Kart Wii at number five with nearly 3.1 million sold, Wii Play at number six with more than 3.1 million sold, Wii Fit Plus at number eight with more than 2.4 million sold and Pokemon Platinum Version at number ten with more than two million sold.
