• Earlier today Bungie finally revealed some details about their next franchise, Destiny.  You are probably wondering what type of game Destiny will be.  Well, you can’t pigeon hole it into just one genre.  It is part first person shooter, part mmorpg and potentially more.  Destiny will require that you are connected to the internet at all times, however, there will be no subscription fee to play the game.  Please note that Microsoft hasn’t commented yet on whether you will need Xbox Live Gold to play Destiny or not.  I think the safe assumption is you will need to be a gold member but no one knows for certain.

Destiny is currently slated to be released on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  Additionally, Bungie also stated that Destiny will appear on “future generation technology” which most likely means the PlayStation 4 and the new Xbox.  Unfortunately Xbox 360 gamers will not be able to play with PlayStation 3 gamers.  No word yet on if Xbox 360 gamers will be able to play with Xbox 3 gamers.

It sounds like your experience with Destiny is going to be whatever you make it out to be.  You are able to play the game by yourself but it will be more fun if you can play with a group of friends.  You might also receive help from unexpected places, at any time.  One example that was given was to imagine that you and your friend are engaged in a battle on a planet.  All of a sudden someone else shows up out of nowhere to assist you in the battle.  This character that showed up to help you is another player that has been sent to help you utilizing Bungie’s matchmaking.  It sounded like it is a concept similar to what was seen in the PlayStation Network title, Journey.

The basic premise of Destiny is that it is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity was almost on the brink of extinction.  Before that could happen though a giant sphere, named the Traveler, shows up and protects the last safe human city.  After some time passes humans regain the capability of exploring the galaxy again and other alien races are not to happy about that.  They attempt to wipe out the remaining humans and those are the enemies that you will be dealing with throughout the franchise. Please note that I said “franchise” and not “game” as Bungie has stated that Destiny will be their big new franchise for the next ten years and not just a single game.

Bungie has hinted that Destiny will allow you to travel not only across Earth but also throughout space being able to visit locations such as Mars, Saturn, Venus, etc.  You will be able to customize your experience with your weapons, gears and I’m sure various other items that we don’t know anything about yet.  You will also be able to get a space ship and I assume you will be able to customize that as well as level it up so that you can create a really powerful ship.

This is after all a Bungie game and according to IGN they have hinted that there will be competitive multiplayer as well.  No other details were released though.  As seen in the Bungie Vid Doc there also appears to be an iPhone app (which will most likely be available for other platforms as well) that will keep you constantly connected with the Destiny universe.  It looks like it will inform you of new missions available and you might even be able to help out your friends in some way utilizing this app.

What are your initial thoughts on Destiny?  We have Bungie’s Vid Doc for you to view below as well as a bunch of concept art for the upcoming game and franchise.  Take a look at these and tell us what you think in the comments section below.
